Travel 2004, BANGKOK!...

Bangkok is an amazing city and will set your head spinning the minute you arrive...

"One night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble
Not much between despair and ecstasy
One night in Bangkok and the tough guys tumble
Can't be too careful with your company
I can feel the devil walking next to me"

~Murray Head - One Night in Bangkok (1984)~

Heather and I flew in later in the evening and it's amazing the feeling of walking out of the airport and into the open night air... the heat and humidity come down over you like a wet, wool blanket and you immediately begin to sweat... you can imagine how it was for US after a year in Antarctica!
We hopped a cab to Khao San Road, which is where the less expensive accommodations, commonly referred to as guesthouses, can be found. We had booked a room in a place I found online, the Shambara Boutique Hostel and after the crappy stay at Bondi Sands and then the long flight from Sydney to Bangkok, we were ready to be a bit pampered!... We got to Khoa San Road when I realized I had forgotten the directions to Shambara and with everything so tightly packed together finding a place in Khoa San can be like finding a needle in a haystack! Still, we worked our way down the road dragging our bags and after a few futile attempts to locate the place we opted to have Heather stay in one spot watching the luggage while I ran around in search of our accomodations. With a little help from the tourist police, who have, in my experience, always been very helpful and friendly, I was able to find the place! We got to Shambara, checked in and were delighted to find that the place was clean and comfy and the staff, even at this late hour, were very friendly!

For $11US a night we got a double bed room with air conditioning and although the room is small, it's cozy and clean!

They have a lovely little cafe on the ground floor with a free coffee, toast and jams breakfast and you can dine inside or out in the fantastic gardens.

Shambara is like an oasis in the madness that is Bangkok!
No stop in Bangkok would be complete without a thai massage and being that this was Heather's first trip to Bangkok I made sure we had time to indulge. We went to a place I had frequented in my previous stops in Bangkok and it's a great spot called Pians Beauty Salon and Massage...

We spent only one night in Bangkok on our arrival and then proceeded on to Phuket island and the Le Tong Beach Hotel on Patong beach.
